Snapshots of Surrey

Surrey is a suburb of Vancouver. In March I worked on an elementary school mask project. It was hard work & hours of travel, but gosh it was big fun! Kids take a lot of energy, but they also give an enourmous amount of energy back. There were 2 different shows, with more than 500 children in each show. They act out little scenes, as if an album of photographs comes to life before your eyes. Besides helping the kids to generate ideas & develop small pieces of theatre, I also had an opportunity to make props. You can see the cardboard coyote head I created the weekend before the show & the cellphones that all those kids are using I made of cardboard & tape. The masks in the photos are Gina Bastone's. It was her mask project that I worked on in March.

Harupin-Ha Butoh Dance Theatre

Harupin-Ha Butoh Dance Theatre was in Vancouver for the Vancouver International Dance Festival. First generation butoh masters Koichi & Hiroko Tamano & two budding butoh dancers, Hiroko Sadamori & Aya showed us an evening of butoh at its best. Here are some photos from the dress rehearsal. Hiroko Tamano will be teaching with us at Camp Winnarainbow for Adults this coming June 13-18.
